Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was born in 1883 in the town of Saumur, France. Her mother died when she was six years old, and shortly after she left her father and his four brothers. The children were under the care of relatives, but spent some time in a French orphanage. The costume of the nuns of equity in this area, strongly influenced later classical design, the little black dress, Women’s clothing styles and square. These were a far from the tight corset look of the day.
The nickname Coco was probably purchased at the Rotunda, a visit to a café in Montparnasse district of Paris, often by members of the French cavalry, and many artists in the early years of the twentieth century. Chanel was a cabaret singer here, famous for a song called “Here qu’a vu Coco,” and the name stuck.
